3. The April Revolution and the Move Toward Socialism

The Armed Forces Movement (MFA) which overthrew the Caetano regime in April 1974 was basically a political movement. The MFA was primarily interested in ending the dictatorship, moving toward democracy, and--above all--ending the colonial war in Africa. In economic terms, there were vague goals of greater development and equality, but no exact strategy was worked out. In fact, a precise strategy would have been difficult to work out because of the disparate elements making up the MFA, ranging from committed socialists to equally committed capitalists. The situation was made somewhat clearer after General António de Spínola, first head of the revolutionary government, was thrown out in September 1974 and the Communist Party (PCP) began to take a more active role in the process. It was then that the so-called “flower revolution” became firmly linked with the goal of establishing socialism in Portugal.20
